Winter Wellness: Strengthening Your Immune System

1. Strength Starts in the Gut

Did you know that around 70% of your immune system lives in your gut? It’s true. A balanced gut microbiome helps your body fight off infection and inflammation.

Tip: Add probiotic-rich foods like yogurt, kefir, or sauerkraut to your daily meals. If your diet doesn’t include many fermented foods, a high-quality probiotic supplement can help. Look for one with multiple strains and at least 10 billion CFUs.

2. Vitamin D: Your Winter Sunshine

Low Vitamin D levels are common in winter when sunlight is scarce, and that can leave your immune system dragging.

The fix: A simple daily Vitamin D3 supplement (1,000–2,000 IU for most adults) can make a world of difference. If you’re not sure where you stand, I can check your Vitamin D levels and help you choose the right dose.

Bonus Tip: Pair Vitamin D with Vitamin K2 to support bone and heart health, too.

3. Zinc and Vitamin C: The Dynamic Duo

Zinc helps immune cells work properly, while Vitamin C fights off free radicals and supports healing. Together, they’re like your immune system’s power couple.

What to look for:

  • Zinc (10–20 mg daily)

  • Vitamin C (500–1,000 mg daily in divided doses)

You can get both from foods like citrus, peppers, nuts, and seeds, but if your diet needs a boost, a balanced immune-support supplement can help fill the gaps.

4. OMM: The Hands-On Immunity Booster

Supplements support your body from the inside, but Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) helps it function at its best. Gentle, hands-on OMM techniques improve lymphatic flow, reduce inflammation, and calm the nervous system—all key players in immune health.

When your body’s alignment and circulation are balanced, it’s easier to fight off infection and recover faster if you do get sick.

I like using OMM to help patients:

  • Relieve sinus congestion

  • Support lymph drainage

  • Ease stress that can weaken the immune system

I love seeing my patients feel better after a treatment.

5. Winter Wellness Habits That Make a Difference

Small lifestyle tweaks can make a big impact on how you feel all winter long:

  • Sleep: Aim for 7–8 hours to give your immune system time to recharge.

  • Hydrate: Cold weather can dry you out; keep water or herbal tea nearby.

  • Move daily: Gentle stretching or a brisk walk outside boosts circulation and mood.

  • Limit sugar: Too much can suppress immune function and fuel inflammation.

  • Wash your hands (and phone): Germs love to linger on frequently touched surfaces.

These habits, paired with the right supplements and OMM care, can help you stay balanced, strong, and energized through the cold months ahead.
